Alkmaar
Alkmaar is situated in the northern part of Holland near the coast of the North Sea. In 1254 it was given municipal rights by count William II of Holland, and soon became prosperous as a centre of trading. In 1573, during the Dutch revolt, the city succesfully withstood a siege by a Spanish Army. The slogan Alcmaria Victrix, well-known in the Netherlands, dates from those days. Nowadays the town has around 93.000 inhabitants. For tourists it still organizes the famous cheese-market, a relic from the past when Alkmaar was a very important agrarian market-town.
The 'Regionaal Archief'
The Regionaal Archief holds records of past and current civic administrations and associated agencies of Alkmaar, the communities around Alkmaar, viz. Anna Paulowna, Bergen, Castricum, Den Helder, Graft-De Rijp, Harenkarspel, Heerhugowaard, Heiloo, Langedijk, Niedorp, Schagen, Schermer, Wieringen, Wieringermeer and Zijpe (see map), and a number of predecessors of the water-board Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier. The Regionaal Archief also preserves archives of non- governmental organizations as well as personal (i.e. of local families) records and archives.
